Short version: this site uses Google Analytics to count visits, and it carries Google advertising code. Both set cookies in your browser. There are no accounts, no comments, and no contact form, and we never ask you for personal details. The only personal data we hold ourselves is whatever you choose to put in an email to us.

What we collect
Server and CDN logs
This site is served through a hosting provider and the Cloudflare content delivery network. Like essentially all web servers, these automatically record technical request data: your IP address, the time of the request, the page requested, your browser user-agent string, and the referring page. This happens at the infrastructure level, before our software sees the request.
These logs exist to deliver the site, block abuse, and diagnose faults. We do not use them to build profiles of visitors, and we do not combine them with any other data.
Email you send us
If you email us, we hold that email (your address, your message, and anything you include) for as long as needed to deal with it and keep a record of corrections made to the site. We do not add you to any mailing list.
Analytics and advertising
This site uses two Google services. Both are ordinary for a site like this one, and both mean some data about your visit goes to Google rather than staying with us.
Google Analytics
We use Google Analytics 4 to count visits and see which pages people actually read. It records the page you viewed, the page that referred you, an approximate location derived from your IP address, and basic device and browser details. It sets first-party cookies, normally named _ga and _ga_ followed by a property identifier, which let Google tell a returning browser from a new one.
We use it for one thing: deciding what to write next and what to fix. We do not try to identify individuals and have no way to do so from what it reports. Google processes the data under its own terms, and states that it does not log or store raw IP addresses in Analytics 4.
Google advertising
This site carries Google AdSense code. Google and its partners may set cookies or read device identifiers in order to serve and measure ads, and where enabled to personalise them. What Google collects for advertising is governed by Google’s own privacy policy rather than this one.
How to turn it off
- Google’s ad controls at My Ad Center switch off personalised advertising across sites, including this one.
- Google publishes a browser add-on that opts you out of Google Analytics everywhere.
- Any browser or extension that blocks third-party scripts stops both from loading here. Nothing on this site breaks if you block them, including the two interactive tools, which run entirely in your own browser.
- Clearing cookies for this domain drops the analytics identifier, and you will be counted as a new visitor next time.
What we do not collect
- No accounts. Visitor registration is disabled. You cannot create an account here.
- No comments. Comments are closed, so there is no comment data, and no comment-related cookies.
- No contact form. The contact page uses a plain email link, so nothing is submitted through this site.
- No selling. We do not sell or rent your personal data, and we do not pass your email to anyone. Google advertising cookies may be used for personalised ads, which some privacy laws treat as “sharing”. The controls below turn that off.
Cookies
Cookies here come from three places. Google Analytics sets first-party cookies, normally _ga and _ga_ plus a property identifier, to tell one browser from another and group requests into a single visit. Google advertising code may set its own cookies to serve and measure ads. Cloudflare may set a strictly necessary cookie for security and bot mitigation as part of delivering the site. WordPress sets cookies only for logged-in administrators, which does not apply to ordinary visitors. Nothing else on the site sets cookies, because there is nothing else here that would.

Retention
- Server and CDN logs: retained for a short period by our hosting provider and Cloudflare under their standard retention policies, then discarded.
- Email: kept while relevant, then deleted. You can ask us to delete your correspondence at any time.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, including under the UK GDPR, the EU GDPR, and the CCPA, you may have the right to access, correct, or delete personal data we hold about you, to object to processing, and to lodge a complaint with your data protection authority.
In practice, the only personal data we are likely to hold is an email you sent us. To ask us to delete it, email [email protected].
Children
This site is aimed at software developers and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children.
Changes to this policy
If we add anything that changes what is collected (analytics, a contact form, a newsletter), we will update this page and change the date at the top before or when it goes live.
